Trail Holds Off Vernon 4-3

VERNON, B.C. OCTOBER 21, 2016

The Vernon Vipers couldn’t find the tying goal despite throwing 48 shots on net in a 4-3 loss to the Trail Smoke Eaters. Despite what the team felt was a lack luster start, the team found the back of the net twice in the opening period getting goals from Jimmy Lambert and Riley Brandt.

The second period is where the wheels fell off for the Snakes. Despite out-shooting the Smokies 20-15, it was Trail scoring three unanswered goals on Cole Demers that put the Vipers down going into the third. Kale Howarth, Kyle Chernenkoff and former Salmon Arm Silverbacks Josh Laframboise adding singles for Trail.

In the third period the Vipers came out with a better effort and Jagger Williamson would score just four minutes into the third period to tie up the game at 3-all. However, Trail’s Kyle Howarth would respond just over a minute later to put his team on top. Howarth’s second goal would hold up as the game winner and would earn him the game’s first star. Second star went to Vernon’s Michael Ufberg who recorded a pair of helpers giving him 5 points in the last two games. Third star was grabbed by Trail’s goalie Linden Marshall who made 45 saves in the win.

Coach Mark Ferner and Captain Riley Brandt called the loss disappointing…

Now only a single point separates the 3rd place Vernon Vipers from the 4th place Trail Smok Eaters in the BCHL’s competitive Interior Division. These two teams will play again tonight at 7pm in Trail at the Cominco Arena.
