Vernon Kia Game Day! – Vipers Host Warriors

Vernon, BC:  The Vernon Vipers look to cap off the home portion of their regular season on a winning note as they host the West Kelowna Warriors in a crucial matchup in the final weekend of the regular season.

The Vipers (30-23-2-1) come into the game having won 2 straight games.  4-2 (West Kelowna) and 5-1 (Merritt).  In those games the Vipers have outscored the opposition 9-3.  Ryan Shostak had his first 3 point night that featured 2 goals and 1 assist including the game winner on Monday against Merritt.  For the second straight game the Vipers kept the opposition to under 30 shots.  Scoring first has been paramount to the success of the Vipers as they are 19-5-2-1 when they get the games first goal.

The Warriors (14-33-6-3) have struggled down the stretch having lost 6 straight.  Since their last game in Vernon last Saturday they’ve played one game that was a 5-2 loss to Trail on Family Day.  The Warriors know they’ll be in the playoffs and know they will face the Penticton Vees in the first round.  The Warriors have been lethal while shorthanded scoring 10 goals while down a man.  That total has them tied with Wenatchee for top spot in the league.  John Evans leads the league in shorthanded goals with 5.  Three of them have come against Vernon, although 2 were into an empty net.

The race for third place enters its final stretch with Wenatchee ahead of the Vipers and Silverbacks by 1 point.  All 3 teams have 2 games remaining.  The Vipers currently sit tied with Salmon Arm, but have the current tie breaker.

The Warriors have the slight edge in the season series holding a 3-2 lead head to head.
