Vernon, BC: The Vernon Vipers are pleased to announce expanded roles for two members of the club’s hockey operations staff, with Mike Sommer being promoted to Associate Coach and Assistant General Manager, while Ryan Hollweg has been promoted to Associate Coach.
The promotions reflect the organization’s continued commitment to building a strong leadership group as the Vipers prepare for the 2026-27 BCHL season.
Head Coach and General Manager Matt Cooke says the promotions are a testament to the importance of stability and the people behind the scenes who continue to move the organization forward.
“Building a successful organization takes trust, continuity and a great team around you,” said Cooke. “Over the past year we’ve built a tremendous foundation, and none of that happens without outstanding people working toward the same vision every day. Mike and Ryan have both earned these opportunities through their commitment, professionalism and the impact they’ve had on our players and our organization.”
Sommer enters his second season with the Vipers after joining the club ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. Along with his coaching responsibilities, he has played an integral role in player evaluation, recruitment and the day-to-day operations of the hockey department.
“Mike’s growth and commitment to our organization have been nothing short of outstanding,” added Cooke. “The impact he’s made behind the bench and in the front office has been tremendous. His attention to detail in preparing our team, along with the exceptional work he’s done evaluating talent and helping manage our day-to-day operations, made this decision an easy one.
“Naming Mike Associate Coach and Assistant General Manager reflects the confidence I have in him, the trust I place in his judgment and the tremendous value he brings to our organization every day. He’s become an integral part of our leadership group and his voice will continue to play a major role in shaping the success of the Vipers both now and in the years ahead.”
Sommer is excited to continue helping shape the future of the organization.
“Our organization has a lot of momentum right now,” said Sommer. “There’s a real belief in what we’re building and it’s exciting to be a part of it. I’m looking forward to continuing to contribute as we build a team that makes our players, fans and community proud.”
Hollweg also enters an expanded leadership role after making an immediate impact during his first season behind the Vipers bench. His experience as a longtime NHL player, combined with his ability to connect with players, has made him a valued member of the coaching staff.
“Ryan has been an incredible addition to our coaching staff and this promotion is a well-deserved recognition of the dedication, passion and hard work he’s brought to our organization every day since joining the team,” said Cooke. “He has an outstanding hockey mind and his extensive playing experience allows him to connect with our players in a meaningful way, earning their trust while helping them reach their full potential.
“Promoting Ryan to Associate Coach reflects the tremendous impact he’s already made and the confidence we have in his ability to help lead this team moving forward. We’re excited to see him take on an even greater leadership role as we continue building a culture that will drive our success both now and in the future.”
Hollweg says he’s excited about where the organization is headed.
“It’s an extremely exciting time to be part of the Vernon Vipers organization,” said Hollweg. “With the work that has been put in over the last 11 months, we are confident that this great organization is ready to turn a corner, and I’m honoured to be a part of it.”
