Built on Consistency: Pankey Joins Leadership Group

Vernon, BC:  Embracing the unknown is part of the journey for many junior hockey players. For veteran defenceman Brayden Pankey, it’s a challenge he has met head-on.

The Spokane, Washington product was no stranger to the BCHL prior to arriving in Vernon. Pankey developed within the Wenatchee Wilderness program — the 18U AAA affiliate of the Wenatchee Wild — and made his BCHL debut as a 16-year-old on November 23, 2022, when the Wild faced the Trail Smoke Eaters.

His path would take him to Colorado for a stint with the Grit of the NAHL before returning to Wenatchee following the Wild’s transition to the WHL. Over the next two seasons, Pankey appeared in 87 games with the Wild, gaining valuable experience and continuing to refine his game.

Shortly after training camp concluded this fall, Pankey arrived in Vernon and made his Vipers debut on September 20 — the club’s second game of the regular season.

From that moment forward, his presence on the blue line has been steady and impactful.

Pankey’s physical style, willingness to block shots, and readiness to engage in the hard areas of the ice quickly made him a mainstay in the lineup. Night in and night out, he has provided the kind of reliability that coaching staffs value deeply.

“Brayden has been a tremendous asset to the Vernon Vipers,” said General Manager and Head Coach Matt Cooke. “Consistency is one of the hardest things to bring to the table every day and we know exactly what to expect from him, on and off the ice.”

While not traditionally known for his offensive production, Pankey has recently added another dimension to his game. Over the past stretch, he has contributed two goals and four assists — including a game-winning goal in West Kelowna — showcasing continued growth and confidence.

Cooke has seen that evolution firsthand.

“He leads by example, but has also found his voice and his role with this group,” Cooke added. “We couldn’t be happier to have him join the leadership group as an assistant captain and we look forward to watching him develop as a player and a person.”

Now, Pankey joins a veteran-laden leadership group as the Vipers push toward the postseason — a role he embraces with pride.

“Being named to the leadership group is a huge honour for me,” said Pankey. “We’ve had a year of ups and downs, but I think that’s what has brought us closer together as a team. We’ve learned how to stick with each other, build a strong brotherhood and create a strong culture in our room. I’m proud of that and to help lead this group moving forward.”

As the regular season winds down and the intensity rises, Pankey’s steady presence — both physical and vocal — will remain a cornerstone for Vernon.

For a player who has navigated multiple leagues and embraced every opportunity along the way, this next chapter feels like a natural progression.
