Vernon Vipers Name Matt Cooke as Head Coach and General Manager

Vernon, B.C. – The Vernon Vipers are proud to announce the hiring of Matt Cooke as the organization’s next Head Coach and General Manager.

"I'm incredibly honoured to be named the next Head Coach and General Manager of the Vernon Vipers,” said Cooke. “The Vipers are a team with a rich and storied history, and it's a privilege to join an organization that has meant so much to the community in Vernon — and to the BCHL and junior hockey across Canada. I'm excited to be a part of rebuilding a culture of excellence here in Vernon and returning this organization to being a perennial contender for the Fred Page Cup.”

Cooke, a native of Belleville, Ontario, brings a wealth of experience both on and off the ice. Over a 17-year NHL career, he suited up for 1,046 games and was a member of the 2008–09 Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. After retiring from professional hockey, Cooke transitioned into coaching, including three seasons behind the bench in Minnesota high school hockey, and most recently, as Head Coach of the Newfoundland Growlers (ECHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) in 2023–24.

“This is a special day for our organization,” said Vipers owner Tom Glen. “Matt brings tremendous experience as both a player and a coach. His work ethic is second to none, and we are absolutely thrilled to welcome him to the Vernon Vipers.”

Cooke will take over immediately as the team prepares for the upcoming BCHL season.
